PRETORIA: South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been released from prison on parole, according to the Department of Corrections. Pistorius, known for his achievements as a double-amputee Olympic runner, has completed nearly nine years of his 13-year and five-month murder sentence for the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.
The release took place in the early hours from the Atteridgeville Correctional Center in Pretoria, the capital of South Africa. The Department of Corrections did not provide any further details about the release.
In November, Pistorius was granted parole after meeting the eligibility criteria, which requires serious offenders to serve at least half of their sentence.
“We can confirm that Oscar Pistorius is now at home. He was released this morning,” said a spokesperson for the Department of Corrections.
Pistorius’ release marks a significant development in his legal journey, as he transitions from prison life back to society.
