NEW DELHI: Alleging serious breach in Rahul Gandhi’s security in Assam during the ongoing ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday urged home minister Amit Shah to direct the CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and the state’s police chief to ensure there is no repeat of “untoward incident which may lead to grave personal injury” to the Gandhi scion, reports Subodh Ghildiyal. He also alleged that the attack on Congress leaders and disruptions to Yatra took place in Sonitpur where the CM’s brother is the local police chief.
Kharge wrote to Shah after Rahul’s bus journey faced blockades and protests from BJP workers this week, with videos of miscreants attacking cars and publicity material of Congress also going viral. At the same time, police filed an FIR against Rahul and other Congress leaders.
In his letter, Congress chief alleged that Assam police has “systematically stood by” and allowed BJP workers to come very close to the convoy of Rahul, breaching his security cordon and endangering his security as also of his team.
Narrating the incidents since the Yatra entered the state on Jan 18, Kharge said police were found protecting posters of BJP in Sibsagar district instead of ensuring safe passage for the Yatra, while the next day, miscreants allegedly associated with BJP were caught destroying the posters and hoardings of Yatra in Lakhimpur district.
On Jan 21, Kharge alleged an outrageous attack took place on the Yatra in Sonitpur even as the local police SP and Sarma’s brother “watched to see that BJP workers manhandled the Congress social media team” and AICC general secretary and MP Jairam Ramesh’s car was also attacked, with the assailants shouting anti-Yatra slogans.
