IMPHAL: The editor of a language daily in Manipur was arrested Friday – the second in just over a week – and charged with promoting enmity on grounds of religion and race after his paper’s reportage of “deteriorating” law and order in Moreh following attacks by armed groups on forces, report K Sarojkumar Sharma & N Benson Singh.
Dhanabir Maibam, editor of Imphal’s Hueiyen Lanpao, also stands accused of criminal conspiracy and violating various clauses of the Official Secrets Act, 1923.
Article was written against backdrop of SDPO’s death
The article in Hueiyen Lanpao was written against the backdrop of an SDPO’s death and injuries to nine commandos in a spate of attacks in the town bordering Myanmar since October 31.
Maibam was remanded in police custody for three days, triggering outrage among the media fraternity and various organisations, already alarmed over the arrest on December 29 of Wangkhemcha Shyamjai, editor-in-chief of the language evening daily Kangleipakki Meira.
Shyamjai, who had also been charged with publishing an “incendiary” report with the potential to disturb peace, was given bail last Sunday. He is a former president of All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union. Police sources say the arrest was linked to the report on the situation in Moreh.
Jeet Ningombam, editor of Elite TV, said, “I do not endorse the arrest of a senior editor. He could have been asked to give a clarification if he has made a mistake in his report(s).”
