NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday asserted that his party will “certainly win” the upcoming assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
The former Congress president also predicted that his party would “probably” win the elections in Telangana and that it will be a “very close” contest in Rajasthan.
Assembly elections are due in all the four states as well as Mizoram by the end of this year.Congress currently has governments in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, and is the principal opposition in Madhya Pradesh.
In Telangana, the party is a distant third after TRS and AIMIM. Moreover, the 2023 elections in the southern state will likely see a clash between the ruling TRS and a buoyant BJP.
However, speaking at a conclave organised by the Pratidin Media Network of Assam, Rahul exuded confidence that the party has strong chances of wresting Telangana from TRS and Madhya Pradesh from BJP. He said that it will also retain power in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.
Asked about the party’s chances, Rahul said, “I would say, right now, we are probably winning Telangana, we are certainly winning Madhya Pradesh, we are certainly winning Chhattisgarh. Rajasthan, we are very close, and we think we will be able to win. That is what it is looking like, and by the way, that is also what the BJP internally is saying.”
Rahul added that Congress is controlling the narrative in states like Telangana, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
“If you look at the Telangana polls, we are controlling the narrative, the BJP is not even in the narrative, it is gone. The BJP has been decimated and it is over in Telangana. The Congress is also controlling the narrative in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in the run up to the polls there,” he said.
The Wayanad MP said that in Rajasthan, people are saying that they favour the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government.
Rahul asserted that the opposition is adapting and working together and the BJP is “in for a surprise in 2024” general election.
“We are adapting in a situation where the BJP controls the media. Don’t think the opposition is not capable of adapting, we are adapting, we are working together, we are 60 per cent of India’s population. BJP is in for a surprise in 2024 (Lok Sabha polls),” he said.
