NEW DELHI: The government is striving to bring back stranded Indian students from Israel with PM Narendra Modi and his office closely monitoring the situation, said junior external affairs minister Meenakshi Lekhraj. She said “huge efforts” are under way to get back the students.
There are 18,000 Indian nationalsin Israel but so far no incident of violence involving any Indian has been reported, according to Indian officials.

The embassy in Tel Aviv, however, has received requests from many Indians, particularly tourists, to facilitate their exit from the country ravaged by rocket attacks from Hamas.
PM Narendra Modi Saturday said he was shocked by these terrorist attacks. The Indian embassy in Tel Aviv and the representative office of India in Palestine on Saturday issued advisories asking Indian nationals in respective countries to “remain vigilant” and “directly contact the office” in case of emergency.

“It’s very intense and scary…” Indian student in Israel: Hamas attack

There are some businessmen visiting Israel who have gotten caught up in the escalation and are looking to be evacuated. A big chunk of Indians living in Israel work as caregivers but there are also about a thousand students, several IT professionals and diamond traders.
Bindu, a doctoral student at Hebrew University, told PTI that she “followed the instructions in letter and spirit throughout the day” on Saturday and felt safe.

She said that all Indian students are in touch with each other and are constantly taking stock of the situation. Some other students, when contacted, also said that they see the situation coming under control and “we should not spread panic unnecessarily”.
Meanwhile, Israel ambassador to India Naor Gilon said support from India, including from PM Modi, was important because of India’s own experience with terrorism.
“India comes from a position of a country that knows terrorism. So it comes from a point of knowledge and not of ignorance. And for that, we are very much thankful. And again, Israel needs only moral and political support. Work on the ground we know how to do it, but we need to have the ability to execute the plan in order to make sure that Hamas will not threaten anyone else again,” he said.
