BHUBANESWAR: Dilip Samantaray, a mechanic who suffered severe burn injuries in an AC compressor blast at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on December 29, and was declared dead the day after in a case of mistaken identity, succumbed to injuries early Saturday.
The hospital had initially declared another mechanic, Jyotiranjan Mallick, 34, who had died on December 30, as Dilip. Soumyashree, Dilip’s wife, reportedly killed herself on January 1, unable to bear the grief. The announcement by the hospital on Saturday left Dilip’s mother and other family members devastated for a third time. Jyotiranjan’s family, too, is in a shock after not being able to claim his body for the last rites.
“Dilip was declared dead at 3.10 am on Saturday. We immediately informed his family members. We will hand over the body to police and they will take care of other formalities,” said Hi-Tech Hospital CEO Smita Padhi.
Prakash Chandra Pal, additional DCP, said the body would be sent to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar for postmortem, pr-eservation, DNA profiling.
