Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed in Pakistan custody serving 78-year jail sentence: UN information

NEW DELHI: Mumbai terror attack mastermind and leader of the banned Jamat-ud-Dawah, Hafiz Saeed, is currently in the custody of the Pakistani government, serving a 78-year imprisonment sentence for his involvement in seven cases related to terror financing.
This information was revealed by the United Nations (UN) in an updated report.

India had previously requested Pakistan to extradite Saeed, who is a designated global terrorist by the UN Security Council’s 1267 Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee.

He is wanted by Indian investigative agencies in connection with several terror cases.
According to the amended entry in the Sanctions Committee’s list, Saeed has been in the custody of the Pakistani government since February 12, 2020.
He was convicted in seven terror financing cases, leading to his 78-year imprisonment sentence.
The Security Council Committee recently made amendments to its list of individuals and entities subject to asset freeze, travel ban, and arms embargo.
As part of these amendments, the Committee also confirmed the death of Hafiz Abdul Salam Bhuttavi, a founding member of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Saeed’s deputy.
Bhuttavi, who played a crucial role in training the LeT attackers for the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, passed away in prison in May last year. He was serving a sentence for his involvement in terror financing.
