KOTA: A 16-year-old JEE aspirant allegedly died by suicide by consuming a poisonous substance in his PG room in the Vigyan Nagar police station area of Kota late Thursday night.
The deceased was identified as Abhishek Mandal (16), a resident of Bhagalpur in Bihar, who had been preparing for the JEE in a coaching institute in Kota for over a year and was living in a PG room.
His body was recovered on Friday morning after he did not respond to calls from his family members. This marks the fifth case of suicide by a coaching student in Kota this year.
In a two-lined suicide note recovered from the PG room along with a vile of Celphos, the deceased boy expressed his incapability and distress over not being able to crack the JEE. “Papa, Mere se JEE Nahi Ho Payega, Sorry, I quit (Papa, I will not be able to crack JEE, Sorry, I quit)” read the suicide note found in his room.
“According to records from the coaching institute where the deceased boy was studying, he was scheduled to take the JEE entrance exam on January 29 and February 19, but he did not appear for either test,” stated Circle Officer of the area, DSP Dharmveer Singh.
“The teen consumed the poisonous substance Celphos sometime late Thursday night, and when he did not respond to calls from his family members on Friday morning, the PG caretaker reached his room and peered through the window to find the boy lying unconscious,” the DSP said, adding that the boy was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The body has been kept in the hospital mortuary for postmortem examination, which will be conducted after the arrival of his parents from Bhagalpur in Bihar, he said.
At least 26 coaching students had died by suicide in Kota in 2023.
