NEW DELHI: In its second meeting held on Wednesday on one nation, one election, a high-level committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind accepted the resignation of leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from the panel’s membership.
Union home minister Amit Shah, law commission chairman Ritu Raj Awasthi, law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and senior advocate Harish Salve were among those who attended the high-level meeting.
The members of the law commission gave a detailed presentation to the Kovind committee on necessary constitutional amendments required for the proposed simultaneous elections to Parliament and state assemblies. The panel has been renamed as ‘High level committee on one nation, one election’.
According to the law ministry, letters have been sent to six national parties, 33 state parties and seven registered unrecognised parties inviting their suggestions on the subject.
The secretary of the panel, law secretary Niten Chandra, informed the members that a website www.onoe.gov.in has also been developed, which besides being a repository of all relevant information, shall provide a platform for interaction and receiving suggestions from all stakeholders. The website was launched during the meeting.
When the law ministry had notified the constitution of the committee, it had eight-members, that including Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. However, Adhir Ranjan later withdrew from the committee, signaling opposition to the idea of simultaneous polls.
