The deceased (17), a student of Bengali, who had moved into the hostel last Sunday (August 6), had been found critically injured, without a stitch of clothing on, after a fall from the second-floor hostel balcony around 11.30pm on Wednesday. He died in hospital a few hours later. After questioning several boarders, the police, who arrested Sourav on Friday, believe the victim had been subjected to two hours of ragging before he fell.
Deepsekhar and Manotosh were arrested early on Sunday after they were questioned.
The West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights has demanded Pocso charges against the arrested trio, as the victim was not yet 18, and there were “clear indications” that he had been sexually harassed.
Manotosh and Deepsekhar were produced in court and sent to police custody till August 22. During the court production, the cops presented accounts of a cook and a JU student to point out that the duo had habitually tortured first-year students. The cops also said a diary and a letter, which the accused had forced the victim to write, had also been seized.
The cops further said two witnesses had spoken about torture by seniors. Freshers were forced to cut their hair short, use foul language against other freshers and their relatives and, at times, even forced to walk on balcony railings.
