BHOPAL: A trial court in Narmadapuram district in Madhya Pradesh has sentenced three persons, involved in the murder of 76-year-old social worker Sumati Gopal Krishna Kulkarni ‘Sumati Tai’, to life imprisonment.
The convicted individuals — Pradeep Bhat, Mohit Bhat, and Dinesh alias Dinna Rajput — were found guilty of conspiring the murder on the night of January 9, 2017.
A bullion businessman implicated in the same case was acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
The Sumati Kulkarni murder case had triggered heightened tensions in the Lakadganj and Gandhinagar areas of Itarsi, spanning one and a half to two months.
Protests took place against the police due to the lack of progress.
More than 50 suspects, including criminals and miscreants, were interrogated in connection with the blind murder.
However, in two months, the suspects were apprehended by the police.
The courtroom proceedings, presided over by Judge Sushila Verma, concluded with additional government advocate Bhure Singh Bhadoria representing the government’s case.
The defense team included then ASP Ashutosh Pratap Singh, additional superintendent of police Shashank Garg, TI Bhupendra Maurya, sub inspector Umashankar Yadav and Anjana Bhalavi, all of whom played pivotal roles in the case.

BLIND MURDER

The assailants not only took her life but also looted her jewelry and money.
They were convicted under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and were handed life sentences, accompanied by fines.
Sumati Tai, a member of the Kulkarni Dutt sect, was known for her participation in weekly bhajan programs and was remembered as a gentle and unassuming woman, survived by three daughters and a son.
The police’s commendable efforts in unraveling the blind murder case were acknowledged and honored by the Senior Citizens Association and the city residents.
Police said it was a significant challenge for them to apprehend the correct suspects in this murder case.
