NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to pass status quo order on Bihar caste survey, saying that restraining the state government from taking policy decision would be wrong.
The Supreme Court told the plea of petitioners that Bihar’s caste survey being violative of right to privacy may not right but the important issue was breakdown of data which would be examined by court.

The SC issued notice to Bihar govt on a batch of petitions challenging caste survey in the state and posts the case for hearing in January. Bihar contends that it is the mandate of apex court to collect data and there is no illegality in survey.

The much-awaited results of the caste survey conducted by the Nitish Kumar government were released earlier this week.

The Extremely Backward Classes are the largest social segment in Bihar, with a population of 36% of the total, followed by the Other Backward Classes who constitute 27.13%. Together, the two groups comprise 63% of the state’s total population, which stood at a little over 13.07 crore. The general category comprises 15.52% of the total.
The data of the survey was released by state development commissioner Vivek Singh. The survey revealed that the Yadavs, the OBC group to which deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav belongs, are the largest in terms of population, accounting for 14.27 per cent of the total.
