Three students of Bengaluru medical college test positive for cholera; four in ICU | Bengaluru News

BENGALURU: At least three medical students of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI), admitted to Victoria Hospital, have tested positive for cholera, a student representative at BMCRI told TOI. “The culture test report indicates it is the Ogawa serotype,” he said, adding, “Strangely, the test reports are not being shared with those undergoing treatment.”
As of now, 70 female medical students were admitted to Victoria Hospital on Friday after they developed symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.All the infected students are inmates of Kaveri Hostel located within the campus. “Four with severe symptoms have been admitted to the ICU. The rest are currently stable and are being treated at H Block on the first floor of Victoria Hospital. They have cordoned the area,” said a source.
The students started experiencing symptoms since Thursday. “If the source of infection is drinking water, there might be more cases,” added the source.
Meanwhile, medical students of BMCRI told TOI that they have been living in extremely unhygienic conditions. “Even pure and safe drinking water, which is a basic need is not being provided. Entire infrastructure needs to be overhauled.”
