KYIV: Russia launched its most intense drone attack on Ukraine since the beginning of its full-scale invasion in 2022, targeting the capital.
“Kyiv was the main target,” Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk wrote on his Telegram channel.
Russia used a total of 75 Iranian-made Shahed drones in the attack on Ukraine. Out of 75, Ukraine’s air defenses were able to destroy 74 ,Ukraine’s air force said.
The attack was described as “the most massive air attack by drones on Kyiv,” by Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv city administration.
Ukrainian air force spokesman Yurii Ihnat confirmed later that the air defenses shot down 66 air targets over Kyiv and surrounding region throughout the morning.
At least five civilians were injured, and several buildings, including a kindergarten, were damaged by debris from the downed drones. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that among the wounded was an 11-year-old child.
In the Solomiansky district, debris created a crater in the courtyard of a residential area, and the windows of a nearby building were shattered. Residents, many of whom were elderly, received medical assistance at the scene. Some sought refuge in a nearby subway station.
As people were cleaning up debris and broken glass in the neighborhood, the sound of a new wave of drones could be heard nearby.
The attack on Kyiv started at 4 am and persisted in waves for over six hours resulting in power outages in 77 residential buildings and 120 institutions, according to Popko.
Ukraine’s Energy Ministry reported that 17,000 people in the Kyiv region were without power due to the attack, with four power lines being damaged.
Power was restored in the early afternoon.
“Our soldiers shot down most of the drones. Unfortunately, not all,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram. “But we continue to work to strengthen our air defense and shoot down more,” he said.
The attack took place on the morning of Holodomor Memorial Day, which observes the manmade famine in Soviet Ukraine that claimed the lives of millions of Ukrainians from 1932 to 1933. This memorial day is observed on the fourth Saturday in November.
Apart from Kyiv, the regions of Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, and Kirovohrad were also targeted in the assault.
Additionally, in the southern Kherson region, shelling resulted in the death of one person and injuries to three others, regional Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said on Saturday.
According to Prokudin, the region had experienced shelling around 100 times in the previous 24 hours.
